A team made up of a delegation from the British Museum and a group of archaeologists from the Lebanese General Directorate of Antiquities have recently discovered in the archaeological site of Frêres, in the town of Sidón, a underground room of which there was no absolute knowledge.

This can help reveal some of the less known aspects of this city so important in the past and that it can contribute to understanding the history of peoples that passed through here throughout history.

As is often the case, the discovery was made from almost accidental way, at a time when some workers were beginning the construction of the National Museum, which will be erected right next to the site, as reported by different media.

It is hoped that in the future museum it will be possible to house artifacts and ruins of different civilizations that inhabited Sidon, of which we must highlight some that populated this area that predate 3,000 BC., which is of great importance, something that would contribute, without a doubt, to become one of the most important museums in the Middle East.

What is known about this secret room?

At the moment different hypotheses are being considered about it and it is said that this space could become an extension of the Sidon Underground Temple, whose origin is dated in the Bronze Age. It is known that the walls were built with large stones and have a height of approximately four and a half meters and that this room will be about seven and a half meters below ground level.

In the interior of the room many artifacts have been found, almost all in an excellent state of conservation despite the fact that some are made of wood and ceramic. There are some that were used for rituals and others for cooking, mixing liquids, drinking, eating, etc.

It should be noted that not the only discovery in this area because about a decade ago a shrine was discovered dating back to the year 1,300 BC. and where it is believed that at the time they performed rites of worship to the gods. Now, with this new room discovered and that it is a room adjacent to the sanctuary, it is proposed that it is an extension of the temple, although we must wait for the investigations to continue so that they can contribute more data to this finding.

After studying History at the University and after many previous tests, Red Historia was born, a project that emerged as a means of dissemination where you can find the most important news of archeology, history and humanities, as well as articles of interest, curiosities and much more. In short, a meeting point for everyone where they can share information and continue learning.
